On the Sagana-Embu Highway, about 115 km north east of Nairobi, is where Kirinyaga University (KyU) is. It took over from Kirinyaga Technical Institute, which was an idea from the people of Kirinyaga back in 1971, when the then-Vice-President, His Excellency the President, Hon. Daniel Arap Moi C.G.H., M.P., started the Harambee Fund Raising Drive at their request. Kirinyaga County Council gave the institute 200 acres of land in Kutus, and another 50 acres were bought in the Kangaita area on the slopes of Mount Kenya.
