The Great Zimbabwe University was founded on the advice of the August 1995 Chetsanga Report. At the time, it was called Masvingo State University. The report said that Teachers’ and Technical Colleges should be turned into degree-granting institutions that would eventually become universities in their own right. The Masvingo Degree Programme of the University of Zimbabwe started the University in June 1999. Professor Obert Edward Maravanyika was named the first acting Pro Vice Chancellor. He said that the university’s specialty was arts and culture-related studies in the performing, visual, literary, and digital/electronic arts.
