Edith Cowan University (ECU), in Western Australia, is a public university. It is named after Edith Cowan, who was the first woman to be elected to a parliament in Australia. It is the only university in Australia to be named after a woman. In 1991, it became a university by combining tertiary colleges. Its history goes back to 1902, when the Claremont Teachers College opened, making it the modern descendant of the first tertiary institution in Western Australia.
